Hi, I am Rafael Oei (pronounced “oo-ee”). Originally from Singapore, my childhood was spent in church, as my parents were active in the the Music Ministry with the Church of St. Alphonsus (Novena Church) in Singapore since their teens; my mother was the organist there, and both my dad and mum were in the church choir too. It was rather a natural and smooth transition that my mother dropped me into the deep end, and I began playing the organ for Novena Church too, beginning with Saturday Novena Services since age 10. I now reside in beautiful British Columbia, and my parents have since joined me and are now also active with the music ministry with me at Sacred Heart Parish where I have been the Music Coordinator/Director since 2004.
I have been teaching music and the piano since 1986. At the time, the syllabus I covered was based on the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), that being prevalent in Singapore at the time, being once a British colony. Now living in Canada, and a member of the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers’ Association (BCRMTA), Victoria Chapter, I offer students interested in pursuing the graded levels, the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto (RCM) syllabus of examinations. Otherwise, lessons may include anything from contemporary popular music, the classics, rock, and jazz.
